If you would like to allow the customer to have the option for selecting alternative shipping rates during checkout, you can enable multiple shipping rates for a country/region.
For example, you may want to allow for Standard Delivery with a description of Allow 2-5 days for delivery and a 2nd option for Next Day with a description of Allow 1-2 days for delivery as shown by the following screenshot:
How to Set Up Alternative Shipping Rates
To do this, just go into the SHIPPING ADMIN screen and click ADD NEW OPTION under the country/region you want to add an alternative option to and fill in a TITLE for both options and an optional DESCRIPTION.
And then set the rates similar to your other rates and then check the ACTIVE checkbox, click SAVE CHANGES and then SETTINGS - CLEAR CACHE to put the changes live immediately.
And always remember to do test orders to ensure that everything is working as it should.
How to Remove an Alternative Shipping Rate
To remove a shipping rate option, just click Delete This Option.
Free Shipping Promotions
If running a FREE SHIPPING promotion, note that the user will only be offered free shipping if they select the default shipping rate, and not if they change it to an alternative shipping rate.
Prompting User to add more items to their basket for free shipping
Similarly, you may have set it up for the user to be prompted with a message like "You just need €4.50 more to be eligible for FREE SHIPPING". This is calculated using the default shipping rate.
How to Know which Shipping Rate the Customer has purchased
When an order is completed, the shipping rate is displayed as an order item in the order. The TITLE of the order item will also have the TITLE of the shipping rate selected by the customer.
Also, for systems integration, there is a field in the XML download called ShipLocID that can be used to differentiate between the shipping rates selected - as well as an XML field called ShipLoc which contains the text title of the shipping rate.
