You can now add a second bonus promotion on top of existing promotions which may be running across your site. This is available for Percentage Off promotions only and will facilitate offers such as Extra 10% Off All Sale.
Bonus Promotions are set up exactly like a regular Percentage Off Promotion, but there are two additional elements required - make the promotion a Bonus Promotion, and Sort Order.
Getting Started
In the AB Commerce Admin screens, you will browse to Marketing > Promotions and select the Add New Promotion option. Choose Percentage Off promotion to start the process.
Key Element 1
In the settings for the promotion, you will need to activate the option to Make this a Bonus Promotion
This means that this particular promotion will be applied to the selected products, and these price changes will be read by the platform as Was-Now pricing, allowing a second promotion to be applied.
Key Element 2
The second crucial element of a Bonus Promotion is the Sort Order.
This Bonus Promotion must be read and applied FIRST, meaning it must have the lowest sort order of all promotions. The default is 1000, so unless you have ever actively changed this, all your existing promotions will have a sort order of 1000.
Therefore applying a Sort Order of 50 to this new Bonus Promotion will ensure that it is at the top of the list and applied before anything else.
When viewing your Promotions list page, this follows the sort order and is listed in order from the first promotion applied through to the last.
See the Note on Sort Order below for additional information around this.
Complete the remaining settings for this Bonus Promotion and Save Changes to complete the process.
Adding Another Promotion
Now that you have your Bonus Promotion created, you can allow other promotions to apply to the same products. The way to do this is to set the option around Was-Now pricing in the subsequent promotion you wish to apply.
These work in the following ways:
- Add to Existing Promotions - this will add the current promotion to the bonus promotion.
- Leave Existing Promotions in Place - this will ignore the current promotion and only apply the Bonus Promotion
- Replace Existing Promotions - this will apply the current promotion and ignore the Bonus Promotion
- Only Replace if discount is greater - this will only apply the current promotion if the discount is greater than the Bonus Promotion
There are reasons why you may need to use each of these in conjunction with a Bonus Promotion, but to apply the two promotions together, you need to select the Add to Existing Promotions option.
Samples
Here are some sample calculations of what would happen to a €12.99 product which meets the criteria for two promotions which are set up, one being a Bonus Promotion.
- Promo 1: 15% off Category (Bonus Promotion) - Sort order 500
- Promo 2: 10% off Brand (Regular Percentage Off Promotion) - Sort order 1000
When Promo 2 is set to Add to Existing Promotions
- Item was €12.99 > Now €9.94 - Takes 15% off, then 10% off
- Uses promo text from 10% off Brand promotion
When Promo 2 is set to Leave Existing Promotions in Place
- Item was €12.99 > Now €11.04 - Takes 15% off only
- Uses no promo text (this will be resolved in a future release)
When Promo 2 is set to Replace Existing Promotions
- Item was €12.99 > Now €11.69 - Takes 10% off only
- Uses promo text from 10% off Brand promotion
When Promo 2 is set to Only Replace if discount is greater
- Item was €12.99 > Now €11.04 - Takes 15% off only
- Uses no promo text (this will be resolved in a future release)
A Note On Sort Order
When adding any promotion in AB Commerce, the default sort order is 1000. Promotions with a lower number will be given priority. For example, a promotion with a sort order of 500 will be applied before a promotion with a sort order of 1000.
Where all promotions share the same sort order, the most recently added promotion will be applied first.
With the exception of Bonus Promotions, only one promotion can be applied to a product. Once a promotion has been found and applied, the platform no longer looks for other promotions which could be applied. Where a product is potentially eliglible to be included in multiple promotions, on the one with the lowest sort order/most recently added will be applied.
Example: Converse Hi-Top Black Trainers
- Promotion 1: 10% Off All Converse
- Applied to all Brand: Converse products
- Sort Order 1000
- Promotion 2: 15% Off Trainers
- Applied to all Category: Men > Trainers AND Category: Women > Trainers
- Sort Order 2000
In this case, the shoe will have the 10% Off All Converse applied as this promotion has the lower sort order. The 15% Off Trainers will be ignored.
